Island Construction – A Near Miss

Last week, my beau and I were sitting on the couch one day when he quietly, and very seriously, announced that he had almost been killed that morning.

Whaaa? I gasped, my eyes widened, my heart skipped a few beats and then began to pound. My mind momentarily dashed to my dear friend who recently lost her husband in a tragic accident. As he told me the story, my eyes brimmed with tears at the near-miss.

By way of background, extensive construction is taking place on the “ocean ridge” along the eastern side of our island. Set high above the… Continue reading

Visit to Long Island, Bahamas

A few months ago, my beau and I took a trip with friends to Long Island, Bahamas.

Although my beau had been numerous times, and our friends were from there, this visit was a first for me.  Long Island is aptly named – the island is approximately 80 miles in length and only 4 miles at its widest point.  Long Island is south of the islands of the Exumas, where I live (and it’s split by the Tropic of Cancer!), but it is only a short ride in a small plane.

Our friend – with her cat and… Continue reading

Hunting Crabs

A few months ago, my beau and I spent some time on Long Island, Bahamas. One of the highlights of the trip turned out to be my first experience hunting land crabs! Or hunting any crabs, for that matter.

This was an unexpected treat. It just so happened that, while we there, conditions were right and THOUSANDS of land crabs emerged. It had been raining a lot, but that afternoon, the sun came out and so did the crabs. And I mean, literally, THOUSANDS. We were driving down the road and just began to see crabs coming out… Continue reading

Better Life Book Review: A Little Book About Something Much Bigger

Hello, Better Lifers! Well, here comes another “first” for me – I’ve been asked to write a book review, which I present below. First, a little background . . .

In my About page, on the eve of my blog launch, I commented, “Although I won’t talk much about God here, spirituality is an important part of my life. My faith has deepened throughout this journey, and my soul thrives in this serene environment.” Over the next few weeks in the life of my new blog, I proceeded to write – with great response from readers –… Continue reading

California Dreamin’

Hello, Better Lifers! Well, I’ve been globe-trotting again. This time, it was out to southern California for a bit of a vacation. The 3,000 mile flight from Miami to Los Angeles is the longest flight to date for my Beau, and I’m pleased to announce it went well on both the outbound and the return. Each trip, we seem to stretch further, and I’m interested to see if he’s up for an overseas jaunt at some point. I keep telling him, “it’s just another movie!” in terms of additional flight time.

But I digress. We had a wonderful trip and… Continue reading

A Perfect Day (Fishing, Snorkeling, Conch Salad)

A few weekends ago, I enjoyed A Perfect Day.

It was a weekend morning and absolutely beautiful.

Morning sky.

Leaving with friends, we piled into a boat and headed out to sea just before 9:00 a.m. for some fishing.  Into the deep water on the east side of the island, we baited the rods with ballyhoo.

Ready to cast.

The boys fished off the stern, and the girls lounged in the sun on the bow.  After we had trolled along for a while with no luck, we pulled in the lines to check them.  Sure enough, somebody… Continue reading

Do You Miss It? (Big Life Change)

Last week, I posted about things I miss (and don’t miss) as it relates to the specifics of island living. Today, we tackle the bigger picture of what I miss (or don’t miss) as it relates to the major changes I’ve made in leaving the practice of law and life in a big USA City for life on a tiny island.

So, in that context, do I miss it? The general answer is a resounding no. Particularly, when people ask me if I miss practicing law, I surprise even myself by answering that I haven’t missed it or looked… Continue reading

Life Is Precious

I write with a heavy heart today.

Last year, I had the pleasure of reconnecting with one of my best friends from days gone by, with whom I’d lost touch over the years. She was intrigued by my island story and happy for my happiness, but I was equally pleased that she had such joy in her Stateside life. Newly into a second marriage, she was madly in love, pregnant with their baby, enjoying her older children and successful in her profession. Life was great.

Now, the delightful baby is almost 7 months old, and today is my friend’s two-year… Continue reading

Do You Miss It? (Island Living)

Sometimes, people will ask me, “Do you miss it?” The specifics they’re ascribing to that question depend on the context of whatever we’ve just been discussing. However, it usually falls into one of two scenarios: (1) Island Living – the micro view of the challenges inherent in living on a tiny island, or (2) Big Life Change – the macro view of how dramatically I’ve changed my life. Let’s tackle the first one here today.

Island Living

I’ve described before just how very small this island actually is. When talking about life here, which necessarily involves limited shopping and entertainment… Continue reading
